The passions of nations were no longer to mould themselves upon his inclinations. To misappropriate funds under these circumstances is not difficult, and I submit that it is not right to place a large number of young girls in a situation where such misappropriation is easy and safe. If it gained the belief of mankind by its plausibility, it attracted their wonder and admiration; sentiments that still more confirmed their belief, by the novelty and beauty of that view of nature which it presented to the imagination. There is incongruity here between two orders of ideas, if you like; or, as I should prefer to put it, between two levels of interest. Such characters, though not very dignified, are often, in private society, far from being disagreeable.
